Time: 12:00pm - 1:30pm

Description:
As the world becomes increasingly connected through the internet and social media, there are new opportunities for researchers and everyday citizen scientists from all over the world to connect and start sharing knowledge. It is time to start moving research out of the physical laboratory and into the world wide lab, through web-based experiments and methods.

This panel discussion will introduce three groups that aim to engage citizen scientists throughout the world to improve and accelerate research in science, technology, design, and education with the goal of promoting modern research practices that incorporate people from all cultural, social, and economic backgrounds.

Panel members will be four leaders in massive online, web-based research methods: Dr. Laura Germine (Harvard Medical School, testmybrain.org), Prof. Krzysztof Gajos and Dr. Katharina Reinecke (SEAS, labinthewild.org), and Dr. Edith Law (CRCS, crowdcurio.com). Together, they have tested over 2.5 million people and published across fields from computer science to behavioral genetics.

Discussion topics will include advantages and applications of online methods for different research domains as well as ways to engage citizen scientists and encourage broad participation.
