I am a computer scientist researching the context-aware design of machine learning systems that interface with individuals, our environment, and our societies. I completed my PhD in Computer Science at the University of California, Berkeley, where I was fortunate to be advised by Benjamin Recht and Michael I. Jordan. In my research, I use a wide range of research techniques in the union of machine learning, statistics, and algorithms, and I'm particularly interested in problems with the potential for positive social impact. My past projects span developing algorithms and infrastructure for reliable environmental monitoring using machine learning, understanding social outcomes of decisions influenced by machine learning systems, and studying how data acquisition influences the efficacy and applicability of machine learning systems. In the long run, I hope my research contributes to the design and realization of machine learning systems that are effective, data-efficient, and beneficial for all.
